Police in Epping Forest target burglars
|
Over the past two weeks, five different teams of burglars have been arrested. However certain areas within the Epping Forest district were still being affected.
Operation Dalmatian was run for the last two weeks of March, which involved high visibility policing in the areas of Buckhurst Hill and Chigwell. During this period there were no burglaries in the patrolled areas. Approximately 50 stop checks were completed and five people were arrested, including two who were wanted for burglary elsewhere in the county.
Due to the success of Operation Dalmatian a second operation (Clorine) was held in April at Chigwell to target people who travel into the area to commit crime, as statistics showed that 80 per cent of suspects apprehended in the Epping Forest district live outside of the area.
Officers working on operation Clorine carried out high visibility patrols and also placed the automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system in key locations, which read the numbers plates of each passing vehicle warning officers whether the vehicle was stolen or had been used in crime.
Officers issued 30 fixed penalty tickets for various offences, eight stop checks were completed, two vehicle defect rectification schemes issued, nine cars were seized and four people were arrested: including drink driving, disqualified driving, one wanted for actual bodily harm in the Metropolitan Police area, and one for offensive weapons and taking a motor vehicle without consent.
Inspector Simon Werrett said: "Coming home to find your home has been burgled after a long day at work is extremely upsetting experience. We will continue these 'no nonsense' operations to target individuals who come across our borders to commit crime with the full intention of disrupting their day."
