Police launch drive to cut summer burglaries

Police across Southend, Rochford and Castle Point have launched a major drive to combat an anticipated seasonal spike in house break-ins.

Operation Guinea is geared to cutting the number of burglaries through a combination of proactive policing and crime prevention activities.

The concentrated operation will see the number of high visibility patrols, on foot and by vehicle, significantly stepped up across the South Eastern Division. These uniformed patrols will be supported by plain clothes officers deployed around the clock.

The enforcement effort will be underpinned by a public awareness drive, alerting residents to the importance of keeping their homes secure, and the need to report suspicious activity to the police immediately.

Leaflets will be distributed across the districts giving people advice on ways of protecting their homes from burglars.

Burglaries tend to show an increase at this time of year as, encouraged by the hot weather, people are more inclined to leave windows and doors open, overnight as well as during the day.

Said DI John Walne: “An insecure premises is a crime waiting to happen and just the sort of opportunity that the thief looks for. I would urge all residents to be extra vigilant. They should remember to close and lock all doors and windows at night as well as during the day, and call police immediately they see suspicious strangers or vehicles in their area.

“We are putting a lot of resources behind Operation Guinea. We will have a significant number of officers, both in uniform and in plain clothes, out on the street, determined to reduce the number of burglaries and to identify and arrest the people behind them.”
